My Body Is A Temple…Of Doom!

If it aint broke…

I’ve always been one of those people who put things off and thinks that everything will just get better on it’s own (especially when it comes to self-care), but I have to admit that, working in the Voiceover industry, you become much more aware of how you use and look after your whole body. It’s such a valuable tool for our work, and if you know anything about vocal warmups, you’ll know that the whole body is used, not just your voice.

I managed to make it to almost 38 years on the planet without needing to visit an Osteopath - not a bad innings. But after several uncomfortable nights’ sleep, limited range of movement in my neck, and a regular, sharp pain in my left shoulder blade - I decided it was time to bite the bullet and see if I could get some professional help.

The thought of deep tissue massage was enough to put me off going altogether - I remember about 15 years ago at a work’s ‘away day’, we went to a fancy spa and I got my first massage. I absolutely hated it. The masseuse was so rough with me that I felt like crying. That was the nail in my massage coffin - or so I thought…

Clunk, click

This was different though, I needed something fixing (or so I thought), and the idea of being clicked back into place kinda made me look forward to it. After 60 minutes of chatting about the problem, my medical history and getting on the table to be bent and clicked back into shape, I felt so much better.

My Osteopath was lovely, informative, and incredibly helpful when it came to giving me tips and exercises to do at home to keep my joints and muscles moving more freely. He even recommended doing more Yoga and Zumba, which is great because I love them and plan to do more of both.

How do you take care of your body and mind? Is it something you think about more due to the nature of your work?
